As it gets nearer to the time of last year's Boxing Day flood in Salford, those living near the River Irwell are being invited to share experiences and ideas with other victims from Radcliffe, Merseyside, Calderdale, Hebden, Rochdale and Littleborough.
The Flood Community Exchange at St Boniface's Social Club this Thursday will see Diane Crowcroft from the Broughton Trust giving an update as to what is happening to ensure the same cock-ups don't happen again; there'll be a flood-related film screening and Sarah Parkington from the National Flood Forum will lead a community discussion.
The Exchange has been organised by Sophie King at the University of Salford with some local residents.
Meanwhile, money from various benefits and donations in the wake of last year's flood is still to be spent, with three options currently being mulled and priced up – something for the two parks, a siren and a flood warning screen.
There was also some hope for small businesses affected by floods today, as the British Insurance Brokers' Association (BIBA) announced an affordable new flood insurance package available from 7th December*.
"For the thousands of small businesses in our region that currently struggle to secure affordable flood insurance, this is a welcome first step by the industry" said Simon Edmondson, Regional Chairman for the Greater Manchester Federation of Small Businesses "We are particularly pleased this scheme will recognise and reward small businesses who invest in flood resilience measures."
