Back in Italia '90 Salford's Tony Wilson set the tone for what an England football song should be as he presented World In Motion, starring the city's New Order and the national team...
"It's the idea of making a football single and video that isn't a piece of shit" he said "but to actually do something that's a great pop single and a great song..."
World in Motion, he added, "is a football song that isn't singalong shit, although there is a great bit of singalong shit at the end. It's absolutely state of the art."
Since then, Mark E Smith weighed in with England's Heartbeat, under the Shuttleworth name, with Ed Blaney and Girl Peculiar for South Africa 2010, and the classic lines...

Now, Girl Peculiar is back for Euro France 2016 with a freshly released track Believe, an inspiring, dreamy epic, set to some classic England goals on the video. It fits the melancholic, hopeful mood of the nation, with a catchy singalong chorus that isn't `singalong shit' as Mr Wilson decreed...

Believe wasn't intended to be released for the Euros but it appeared yesterday... "I blame Terry Christian, he's been mithering me all day to do it, so we have" laughed producer Ed Blaney.

And, to complete the Salford set, Little Hulton's Shaun Ryder with Black Grape mate Kermit, has unveiled We Are England, under the name Four Lions. What would Tony Wilson have made of it? Well he would have loved the introductory Paul Oakenfold piano break, the galloping riffs, the Caribbean flavour to piss the racists off, Kermit rather than John Barnes rapping and Shaun's poetry of emotion...with lots of `singalong shit' and Bez, Goldie and Trainspotting's Irvine Welsh chucked into the mix...
