Piccadilly Gardens Following last year's huge March With The Homeless, which led to the setting up of homelessness campaign camps around Manchester, Friday, April 15th sees another protest march as the issue continues to persist. In the meantime, this Thursday, April 7th, sees the Manchester Crown Court hearing for last year's march organiser, Wesley Hall, who is charged with Possession Of An Offensive Weapon... Last April, Manchester's March With The Homeless was massive as hundreds of people took to the streets to protest against the growing injustice of homelessness. Happy Monday's star, Bez, addressed the crowd and many Salford organisations, from Coffee4Craig, to the Reality Party and Green Party leant support. The day ended with an attempted storming of Manchester Town Hall but, more importantly, with the setting up of homelessness protest camps and squats which continue to be a feature of the city centre, despite attempts by the authorities to stop them (see here). "We must all work together to end the homelessness in the UK" says this year's March With The Homeless organiser, Emma Leyla Mohareb "This is 2016 and in one of the richest places in the world homelessness should not exist. With legal highs still being rife in the homeless community this can only drive them further down. And homeless people are still being turned away by authorities each and every day." Meanwhile, this Thursday, April 7th, sees the Manchester Crown Court hearing for last year's march organiser, Wesley Hall, who is charged with Possession Of An Offensive Weapon... "For me simply holding a pirate flag!" says Wesley... "CCTV corroborates that I haven't done anything illegal, but following the occupation I was arrested the next day in a poor attempt to disassemble the protest camp which was setup outside the town hall" he explains "We setup a 24/7 street kitchen and I was arrested for two spurious charges of allegedly assaulting G4S staff members who had a cordon at the main entrance... "Since David Cameron has been in power, homelessness has risen over 150% in Greater Manchester, and the Labour Council are criminalising the homeless for using tents" he adds "Over the past year, the homeless of the city have had to resort to squatting in empty buildings; sleeping on the streets or wherever they can get shelter... What we need to do is listen to homeless people and get them involved in developing the homelessness strategy...Sadly, the police still harass the homeless and many are affected by the dangers on the streets such as legal highs, which are ruining the mental health of the most vulnerable in society. These people need housing first. With wrap around support. "For the past few years, since I setup Manchester Angels, I've had nothing but abuse and harassment from the city centre inspector and some of the outreach teams which work in partnership with the police and council" he says "They do not like people highlighting their incompetence..." | Tahir, I'm not defending Longtom because I can't follow what he's saying either but regarding "How many celebrities recently from ITV have been accused of rape, and engaging in underage sex, and found to be innocent of all charges," regarding historical allegations, the only people on earth who know what happened are the people who were in that room, and there won't be a shred of evidence either way, so there's too much reasonable doubt to find someone guilty, even if the allegation was true. |

| Tahir, it seems you're reading things that aren't there. When did I ever contradict the presumption of innocence? To address the small remainder of your comment that isn't banging on about things that I never typed, this dumbed down false dichotomy of "council & courts = bad, anyone who opposes them = good"- while serving the interests of this publication and of people like Wes who can use it to explain away why "the system" keeps locking them up - has a negative effect on issues such as homelessness, as the council have been too preoccupied with dealing with protestors to ever create any real solutions. |

| What on earth are you jabbering about Longtom. You may use a lot of big words, but in my opinion you are absolutely clueless, when it comes to the CPS and the GMP. I have been arrested by the GMP for "Common Assault of an Index Finger", and "Looking like an Afro - Caribean male", "who was acting suspiciously", which is odd, as I'm practically "Albino White". I fight for the Vulnerable, Disabled, Elderly, and the Homeless who live in this city. That means challenging the powers that be, such as the GMP, The Salford Council, and The Mayor of Salford. As an direct effect of my courageous endeavours, I have made a great deal of professional enemies. Just because the GMP or CPS decide to take someone to court, does not mean they are guilty of a crime. Obviously Longtom, in my opinion, you have not heard of, nor possess a true understanding of the Judicial Law System that states "A person is innocent before being proved guilty", "within a court of law". I have been up in court on trumped up charges on many occasions, and was found to be innocent every time. So you can imagine my disgust when you are calling a man "Guilty" before he stands trial, especially when that person is defending the Homeless and Destitute, who sleep rough on our streets. Just because the CPS has progressed proceedings, does not mean a person is guilty. How many celebrities recently from ITV have been accused of rape, and engaging in underage sex, and found to be innocent of all charges. In my opinion Longtom, you should spend a little less time writing and ranting on the Salford Star, and spend a little more time fighting for the people who are sleeping rough on the streets of Salford and Manchester. May I also recommend, that you read, digest, and learn to understand everything about the Judicial Law System, that certainly does not condem a man or woman, based on the decisions made by the CPS. In my opinion Longtom, you are being very judgemental about a person, who you do not know, and is defending those less fortunate than himself. Where I come from, we call people like this "Community Heroes" and certainly not "Villans". |

I struggle to believe that the editor of a news site is unable to comprehend the English language, or the simple logical steps taken in my previous comment. Therefore I'm left with one conclusion, that you're pretending to be less intelligent than you are, to gain the support of your site's audience. If that is indeed the case, then you're grossly underestimating the intelligence of your audience; you're patronising and insulting them, in an attempt to keep them on your side so you can sell them to advertisers. Wesley is being prosecuted because there is sufficient evidence for the CPS to do so. This delusion that 'the system' is dealing him undue harassment is laughable. Almost anyone who stays close to the activism scene in Manchester and researches issues thoroughly rather than relying solely on the propaganda of the criminal Mr Hall will confirm that he does little other than cause damage to and hinder the very causes he claims to 'fight for'. As you commonly disallow comments that negate your polemic articles to be published, I hold little faith in this one meeting the public eye, but I feel it would be very useful for you yourself to read, Stephen, if you wish to produce a news outlet that carries a modicum of objectivity in matters relating to dangerous and damaging characters like Wesley. |
