Children, the elderly, people with mental health issues and those having housing problems are just some of the city's vulnerable people who will suffer from cuts of £31million in the next financial year, as Salford's Labour Council looks set to pass on the ConDem Government's austerity to its citizens.
Two protests have been called for this week by Salford Against The Cuts and Salford City UNISON.
The first is a lobby of Labour councillors who will be meeting at the Civic Centre to discuss the cuts budget. This is at 5pm on Monday, 23rd February, and people will be urging them not to vote in favour of cuts at the full Council meeting on Wednesday.
The second protest will happen outside the Civic Centre as councillors go into the chamber to vote on the budget. This is on Wednesday 25th February from 8:30am.
"Yet again Salford City Council is preparing to shrink public services in the city at the behest of the ConDem government" states Salford Against The Cuts, one of the groups that has called the demos "With £31million cuts to its budget for 2015/16, and even deeper cuts to come in 2016/17, there appear to be no depths to which the council will not sink in their willingness to do the ConDems' bidding.
"Across the country increasing numbers of Labour councillors are realising that this is no way forward, and are making a stand against cuts" it adds "Two leading councillors, Kingsley Abrams in Lambeth and Kevin Bennett in Warrington, have drawn the appropriate conclusion and joined the Trade Unionists and Socialists Coalition which is totally opposed to cuts and privatisation.
"We hope that some of Salford's councillors will also see the need to stand up to the ConDem government this year" the group explains "That is why Salford Against the Cuts is holding a lobby of the Council's Labour group and the full council which sets the budget. In these lobbies we will be joined by Salford City UNISON's members fighting for jobs and services, along with service users and carers."
