SALFORD STAR MARY BURNS AWARDS 2014

SALFORD MAYOR'S EX-SPIN DOCTOR WINS AWARD

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the eighth annual Salford Star Mary Burns Awards, which are given out to honour the most deserving individuals and organisations in the city for their stupid statements, dodgy dealings and iffy activities over the past twelve months.

The In The Thick Of It Award nods to the wonderful comedy series starring Dr Who's Peter Capaldi, which depicted the frothing political PR strategist Malcolm Tucker. So ladies and gentlemen, exterminate your truth and bow to the politician daleks for the winner of the Salford Star Mary Burns In The Thick Of It Award For PR – ex-Mayoral spin doctor who? Matt Finnegan!!!

IN THE THICK OF IT AWARD FOR PR

Goes to…

Ex-Mayoral Spin Doctor, Matt Finnegan

`Toxic' Matt Finnegan, Salford Council's £65,000 Assistant Director of Communications, tried spinning just a little too hard this year and span out of Salford altogether, hopefully, never to be seen again.

Matthew Finnegan's role as head of press at the Council was supposed to be `politically restricted' (see here) but an email to the Manchester Evening News, leaked to the Salford Star, showed that he was promoting Mayor Ian Stewart's choice of Rebecca Long-Bailey, a Labour Party candidate for the seat of retiring MP Hazel Blears. Which was very political (see here).

Meanwhile, in another highly stupid move, democracy-loving Finnegan also tried to ban the editor of the Salford Star from covering the local election count this year, which he had no authority to do. It led to a personal apology from Returning Officer, Ben Dolan (see here).

Finally, in July, under pressure, Finnegan resigned his post and is now spending more time spinning with his family.

Unfortunately his methods of public relations have had a lasting influence on Salford Mayor Ian Stewart – whose latest idea of PR was to set the police onto a resident peacefully protesting about cuts to transport for disabled people – nice! (see here)

So ladies and gentlemen, shove the truth up your Capaldis and spin a round of fake applause for the winner of the Salford Star Mary Burns In The Thick Of It Award For PR...

...Matt Finnegan!!!

I think ian stewrat should accept the award on behalf of his ex political poodle. After all, he was probably the one pulling the strings - as with ALL his cronies at Salford City Council.

'CONCERN' AS SALFORD COUNCIL NURSERIES PUT OUT TO TENDER

In a letter to Salford City Mayor, Paul Dennett, the Save Our Salford Nurseries Campaign has expressed concern that the uncertainty and "slow progress" over the future of the five outstanding Council nurseries "has had a significant impact on the staff and service".

The nurseries were put out to tender last month, and the Campaign, while inviting the Mayor to a meeting at the end of this month, warns him that "A privatised option has been shown to lead to problems of cost, delivery and long term viability".
