With a bridge! Yep, when times were rough and financial pain was all around, Salford Mayor, Ian Stewart, launched an international bridge beauty contest, costing £30,000, to design an `iconic' footbridge going from the Crescent to The Meadows with a budget of up to £1.9million (for more info - click here).
In January this year the winners - Tonkin Liu with Arup were announced, in the same week that the Mayor launched his `Suggest Our Savings' campaign to Council staff and the public, urging them to help with ideas to save almost £25million as the city struggled to cope with cuts.
We're sure that people suggested where to stick the bridge
Now this year, the Mayor is urging people to Talk Budget and is even asking residents to create a budget. The bridge would fit into the Capital Financing bit where there's spending of £33.7million but no other information. Is the bridge budgeted for next year? If so, residents can ask for the money to be stopped and given to something more useful, like services for elderly, young and disabled people. Will they listen? Or will your words, `like silent raindrops fall, into the well of silence'...?
