SWINTON PARK GOLF CLUB OWNERS INTEND TO SHUT CLUB DESPITE REPORT SHOWING IT IS VIABLE

Swinton Park Golf Club has been at the centre of an ongoing battle between its shareholders and its members plus the local community, after plans to sell the site to Your Housing for a reported £10million were disclosed.* After many packed public meetings of the Save Swinton Park Golf Club campaign, an independent viability assessment report of the Club was commissioned by Salford City Council. This week the report, in which Your Housing and the owners of the Club had an input, concluded that the golf course operation was viable, which means that it would extremely difficult for any developer to get 'change of use' planning permission for houses to be built on the site. And on hearing this, apparently, the owners have plans to close the Club and make all staff redundant, despite a prospective buyer making an offer to buy the site and retain it as a golf course. The details have been disclosed in an open letter by the Salford City Mayor. The full letter reads... "Following news of a potential sale of Swinton Park Golf Club to a housing developer (YourHousing) the City Council, acting as an honest broker, commissioned an independent viability assessment of the golf course back in July. This was undertaken to help to provide some clarity on the viability of the golf course's operation and in turn the future of the course as a going concern. Both the owners of Swinton Park Golf Club, Save our Swinton Park Group and the prospective purchasers of the golf course (YourHousing Group) all contributed to the report which was issued on Wednesday.
"Without going into detail, the report concludes that the golf course is a viable concern and I believe this strengthens the planning argument against any change in the current recreational use of the site and supports its designation within the draft Local Plan for the purposes of recreational use or golf.
"I have gone on record previously stating that I would like to see the golf course retained for recreational use as detailed in the draft Local Plan and I am still of that same opinion. This is a historic golf club with a wonderful history and the viability report states the course will be an attractive prospect for potential new owners who are as passionate about the sport as the current members. Given the report's conclusions I would urge the current owners of Swinton Park Golf Club to only consider any possible sale of the site for its current use as a golf course, giving someone else the opportunity to operate it for that purpose.
"Following the news of the outcome(s) of the independent viability assessment, I am saddened to hear today that the club owners plan to close the club and hand redundancy notices to existing staff. This news is especially troubling, as it is my understanding that a prospective buyer for the club has made an offer to purchase the site and retain it as a golf course. "With that in mind, I would implore the current owners of Swinton Park Golf Club to only consider any sale of the golf course to a party interested in maintaining the club for its present purpose.
"The outcome of the viability report has further vindicated the City Council's allocation of the site within our draft Local Plan to be retained for recreational use/golf - something which the City Council will continue to seek to defend and something any prospective purchaser should bear in mind...."

| SPGC is one of the most down to earth clubs and the members are mostly hard working Salford residents. To say all golf clubs are full of Tory types makes me think you haven’t stepped foot in a golf club since the 70’s or 80’s...or just repeating a stereotype you have heard about. Get out of the house, read a book and get off the internet you thick fucker. |

| White just about sums it up. How much is somebody making out of all this? Why are they making money and I am not? When this club went into receivership or liquidation or whatever, last time,the official liquidating the asset, i.e. the golf course, he or she would have been obliged to get the best price for it. This is so the debts of the company can be paid, and any surplus money given to the old shareholders. They are duty bound to get the best price. If they do not,then they are in trouble,they can be sued by the shareholders of the old company. We are not short of golf clubs in Salford. There is more in Salford than most Cheshire towns where I guess golf is more popular. What we are short of is good cheap houses for Salford people to make up for the pathfinder theft. These houses should be for Salford people only full stop .Instead of listening to his new pal Tim who cannot knock a nail in, who gives him the bullshit that you cannot make money out of affordable housing, he should go and talk to the bricky who I presume can knock a nail in. Granted, the bricky is nearly 30 years older than Tim, but he has made about 30 times the cash Tim has, and mainly building affordable homes for housing associations. Tell you what Mr Dennett, why do you not invite the bricky down to the town hall for a chat about housing, and at the same time ask your new mate Tim to come along as well. Pound to a pinch of shit one of them would not turn up. |

All this consultation does ,apart from waste money,is to prove that our mayor ,despite his PHd in business management,is stupid. Let me explain. We know for sure the Salford bricky is not daft, and I do not think for one minute any of his henchmen are. If anyone were to buy that site to run as a golf club, the bricky and his mates would make sure it was, and nothing else. They would tie it up in restrictive covenants so tight you wouldn't be able to fart with them. The people putting the bid in would know that the bricky would do this, so they must be certain that the idea is profitable. Another point, does anyone know where I can read the words of wisdom our mayor wrote in his PHd thesis? They are supposed to be available to the public,but I cannot find his.It would give us all an insight to his thinking. It won't get our ten grand back though. |

Firstof all ,the council waste hundreds of thousands on the broadoak fiasco supporting all the worsley tories in their ghetto for the rich, then we have all this. It is well known that golf clubs are full of Tory types that Ray goes on about all the time. I know lads who worked at this club during alterations.They knew people who played there. The people who played there were not allowed to speak to the construction workers. Its golf club etiquette.If its etiquette you want, go and join Worsley golf club, it is only down the road and they have plenty of it in there. |
