SALFORD RESIDENTS BLOCK A666 ‘BONKERS BUS LANE’

Star date: 2nd December 2019 DOES A BUS LANE FIT HERE? To show the affect of a new 'bonkers' bus lane on the A666, this morning residents coned off a section of the road near Agecroft Fire Station during the rush hour traffic. "We've tried talking to councillors, emailing them and inviting them to meetings and we were getting so fed up we thought we'd take direct action and show how bonkers the bus lane is down this end of the road" explained Paul Brighouse, of the group Stop The A666 Bus Lane Madness. This morning between 7:30am and 9am, local residents coned off a section of the A666 near Agecroft Fire Station and the Irlams O'Th' Height roundabout, to show the affect of what they call the 'bonkers bus lane' that is being imposed as part of the £39.6million Salford Bolton Network Improvements, or SBNI. "We've tried talking to councillors, emailing them and inviting them to meetings and we were getting so fed up we thought we'd take direct action and show how bonkers the bus lane is down this end of the road" explained Paul Brighouse, of the group Stop The A666 Bus Lane Madness. "It's a very narrow bit of the road with queues on the run up to the roundabout and the bus lane is going to take up a lot of space" he added "There's only the number 8 bus that goes the whole route from the M60 junction at Clifton, and when the idea was initially put forward it was just for the number 8, there were no other buses coming down here. "If it had gone down the A6 Chorley Road, past the Civic Centre there were at least three buses from Bolton going into Manchester but that didn't happen for some reason and now we've got it here" he said . Residents argue that the bus lane will affect their quality of life in that they won't be able to park outside their own houses, and that customers won't be able to park outside business premises further up the road. But this is also, they insist, about local democracy and how it works... "There's lots of questions and it seems that they're just spending money for the sake of it rather than talking to local people about it" Paul explained "The decision was made by Transport for Greater Manchester, driven by a Manchester councillor while Salford councillors sat in the meetings and ignored any sort of consultation, and then it was decided by unelected officers in Greater Manchester. "The Salford Mayor knew about this but refuses to engage, as do the local councillors other than Mike Pevitt; they won't even answer emails" he added "That's democracy? That's why we're here." Paul's points were underlined by resident Anne, who said that local MP Rebecca Long Bailey has now stated that she will look into it... "The point is that we should have been able to do all this before, about five years ago when it was being planned, not at the last minute..."

| It seems that the people have actually been listened to as I'm told this insane scheme as been shelved. That's brilliant news, what isn't good news is that the bus lane idea as been rehashed and it is now slated to go along the A6 from Walkden to Swinton, sure some parts are wide enough but in others it's obviously not, just a case of fitting square pegs into round holes. |

| Salford Council care not 1 jot about the lives of the people under its purview, evidence of this can be seen now the new Lidl (shop lifters of Winton heaven) has opened and the insane impact on rush hour traffic on Worsley Road, Parrin Lane and surrounding roads. Like the A666 bus lane this should never have been rubber stamped. |

| Does anyone remember "citizen smith", it was a 198O programme set in tooting, London. Its famous catchphrase was "POWER TO THE PEOPLE" Maybe we should follow this guy and do something drastic and BLOCK off Bolton rd (top rd) for few hours during the peak rush 3hour, 6.3Oam to 9.3Oam and 3pm to 6pm. Maybe then WE can get hundreds of people there to protest with banners saying *NO BUS LANES* .Im off to get ringos crisps now. merry xmas. |

| it is not a question of money borrow the money to build new lines but the point is 2 railway lines are already running through this car congested area its quite basic use the station at clifton and build or reopen new stations at a lot less cost than a 20 million pound 2 mile bus lane and the reason the buses run together is nothing to do with delays it is so the bus drivers can hop stops and make the drive easy for themselves and f the waiting passengers . forgot to add on my post earlier a tram spur could go to ellenbrook ans a spur could go to radcliffe along the railway track via ringley its time to end the polluting car culture it may come as a shock to chug chug users but you are not immune from the pollution you create its also killing you and dont worry about walkways salford is full of walking routes that were not former railways all power to the imagination . |

| Paul Kelly comments are RIGHT about opening up the old train stations. Pendlebury shut down in 1960,it was facing the Italian restaurant on top rd. The irlams o'th'height station shut down in 1956, it was at bottom of bank lane,duchy. At Clifton station, IT NEEDS a COMPLETE REFIT,its a shithole, its like its not been touched since I was born in 1972. It needs a LOT of work, Maybe there should get people on JSA(giro), the layabout people to do some hard graft and get em to work to make Clifton train station up to scratch. There need to get a *LOT MORE* trains to stop there. If the council/rail people got together, there could open up these train Stations and hopefully people will get out of there comfy warm automobiles and use these train stations and that MIGHT ease congestion from wigan/Bolton and Farnworth /kearsley areas going towards Salford/MCR areas. Also, what about a NEW train station being built at Whit lane/agecroft side on the bolton line for all the NEW businesses and the NEW houses already built and the NEW houses being planned for next year on whit lane/Cromwell areas. We will all wait and see. Im off to get some ringo crisps now. Merry Xmas. |

| “To be clear then. This is the same Paul Brighouse who used to be a Councillor? The same one whose comments on the Langworthy Road area in local media were followed directly by a slump in property prices all those years ago? Just want to be clear on that when it comes to assessing whose judgement we should be trusting here! Can’t imaging why he’s now popped up in a different part of Salford.
A few additional points, which I would have thought were obvious but apparently not:
1) We’re in a Purdah period. Councillors cannot comment on such matters in a Purdah period. Criticising them for failing to break the law is no more bonkers than anything else right now i guess.
2) GM is at the point of gridlock. The cause of that is not buses nor bus lanes. It is simply too many cars on the roads. Neither electric nor self-driving cars will change that. I find it utterly bewildering that people don’t join the dots. Excess traffic slows down buses as well as cars. That’s the reason buses run together or have excessive delays.
3) In the absence of the ability to get 50% of cars off the road then, weirdly, the solution is actually... who knew... bus lanes.
4) No idea why there would even be a suggestion of reopening railway lines. No money in the pot. Not environmentally friendly; no profit in short runs; many have already been converted to beautiful and high quality walking and cycling paths and, most obviously, not enough speed in a train over short distances. Same applies to the naive idea of converting the Leigh guided busway to trams. No way could a tram or a train do Astley Street to Leigh in 9 minutes.”

| When our beloved Mayor goes on business to Manchester Town Hall and other such places, does he go on the bus down all these wonderful bus lanes? does he go on the magnificent metro link? Does he go on the train? no he doesn't, he plonks his big fat arse in a taxi, which glides down the bus lanes as he sniggers at motorists caught in the jam. He thinks taxis are public transport, they are, just like concorde was, another socialist idea, public transport for the rich, and those that do not pay out of their own pocket. |

| Good thinking there from Paul. Thing is though, there will never be any money for this sort of thing while we are wasting over 100 billion on HS2. HS2 will benefit only a few going to London, and save 15 to 20 minutes off the journey, what Paul suggests will benefit more people each day, including motorists who have to use cars because of the gear they carry. Common sense will never prevail around here. A town hall protest is needed here,one where they chain themselves to the beams in the town hall and kick up a fuss. |

| It’s going to take 12 months to create this bus lane so more road works just to keep the number 8 running,but for 12 months while the bus lane is being created the number 8 has to wait in line with all the other traffic to get past these road works, very very well thought out plan ,well done to the think tank for coming up with yet another way to waste tax payers hard earned money |

| this latest misguided bus way must not go ahead it is not needed what is needed is a public bus service run for the public at the moment the no 8 run by a private company for the benefit of shareholders is a disgrace i have lost count of the number of times i have waited sometimes for twenty to thirty minutes sometimes longer and on many occasions 2 or even three buses turn up at the same time the six buses per hour /every 10 minutes is a fantasy timetable . the millions of pounds should be used to reopen railway stations at pendlebury / bank lane on the height and the reopening of pendleton station stupidly closed 15 years ago the line atherton to manchester should then be converted for tram use in the future spurs from the atherton line could go to eccles via walkden worsley monton / further up the spurs could go to little hulton and leigh . another alternative would be to use clifton junction currently just one train calls at this station a timetable needs to be introduced at once more stations should be built on the way into manchester at agecroft /for whit lane where a large amount of houses are being built a viable alternative to cars and the pollution they cause and the damage these fumes are causing to the young the old and the environment . |

| I was there at 7.30am in the COLD for 30minutes to see this happen. It was hammered/choca block with TRAFFIC going towards MCR. I did have a chat with a few people including the householders facing this bus lane and the people stuck in there cars all going to WORK. There are ALL behind Paul Brighouse and what he is trying to do. RAISE AWARENESS of this and try STOP this bus lane being built. Sadly, This bus lane has already been passed by the clowns at the council and is already planed for next year, it will take 1year to be completed, yes, one year of more stationery traffic not moving, all for the number8 to travel on it every TEN minutes. it's MADNESS... merry Xmas. |
