The Kings Arms has the perfect event planned for those looking to celebrate the solstice in a unique and unforgettable manner. Summer Solstice Ritual (SSR) promises a brilliantly full-on evening of Pagan-esque festivities. It is a fitting celebration of summer featuring a (witches) hatful of weird and wonderful acts.
Invoking the original spirit of summertime, the line-up at the Kings on Saturday 22nd June is packed with original and inspired artistes. There is live music from established circuit favourites coupled with performances from some wonderful one-offs.
Revel in the dark vocal pop of the highly-rated Trianglecuts, or the unique brilliance of Slowknife. Trianglecuts are a fittingly individual act for this soiree with great tunes and stage-presence. Slowknife incorporate spoken-word with jazz and punk. They have been wonderfully described as John Cooper Clarke and Tom Waits arguing whilst pissed at bus stop.
Other performers include live artist, actor and experimental musician Louise Woodcock and Erik Kellar's Heathen Chamber. According to Erik Kellar's press, they are intriguingly on-hand to, ahem, 'toast the horned God of Fertility'. If that hasn't piqued your interest, they also promise to 'refract Heaven and Earth through an obsidian prism'; a boast that you don't hear often enough... If they aren't great, then my rune stones are clearly wrong.
We're also reliably informed that the Egyptian cat goddess, Bastet, will be making an appearance. Bastet will ensure that the ceremony is given due respect and will keep her 'all-seeing eye' on proceedings. If you are in need of refreshment after a spellbinding ritual grab a Virgin Blood cocktail (available at the bar).
If you feel that festivals are becoming over-priced, painfully corporate or just too much bloody hassle, SSR has an eccentric solution. Summer Solstice Ritual is a sardonic spin on the folk traditions of old. The evening offers a great opportunity to connect with your inner-druid and lose yourself in a magically, off-kilter night.
Escape from the hum-drum and indulge in an eventful and surreal mini-festival. It's conveniently all under one roof and portaloo-free. It's a hell of a lot of Goth wonderment for a fiver.
