The video for the new Benefit State re-working of Ewan MacColl's Dirty Old Town features probably the last cinematic footage of the iconic Salford gas holders before their demolition was complete this year.
The mini-film stars Jimmy Foster and Kelly Hughes arguing and loving as they stroll past the structures and canal, while the band play the Salford anthem in the background. Overlaid is a drive from the gasworks to The Height, via Liverpool Street and Langworthy Road.
Meanwhile, the re-working of the song itself gives MacColl's most famous song a punk oomph never heard before...
"After seventy years we've brought Dirty Old Town up to date" says producer Michael Lightfoot of TNT Experience Promotions "This has never been attempted."
The ace track and video was premiered before a live audience at the Union Tavern on Liverpool Street at the end of February and is now available on YouTube.
