SALFORD COUNCIL TAX TO SEE £6.30 EXTRA FOR GREATER MANCHESTER MAYOR

The average household in Greater Manchester will be paying an extra £6.30 on Council Tax bills from April for the Greater Manchester Mayor, it's been announced this morning. For Salford residents, this will be on top of the 4.99% Council Tax rise announced by Salford City Council last week. The Greater Manchester Mayoral 'precept', as it's called, was originally proposed to be around £7 but today it has been confirmed at the new figure. In January, the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) approved 'Mayoral Capacity Funding' of around £7.6million, of which £732,000 was for 'Direct Mayoral and Support Costs'. Other costs were Spatial Development Strategy £643,000; Cost of Administering Grants to Bus Operators £50,000; Transport, Policy and Strategy £3.9million, and 'Other Mayoral priorities' £2.26million. "I've been clear throughout this process that, along with Greater Manchester's ten Leaders, we will do everything we can to keep residents' Council Tax bills as low as possible while protecting essential services" says Andy Burnham "That is why, after receiving the final tax base figures from districts and reassessing reserves in the Fire and Rescue Service budget, we have been able to cut the proposed Mayoral precept. "I recognise that it is a big ask for people to pay anything more, especially in these difficult times" he adds "I hope that today's decision shows that we have done everything we can to keep bills as low as possible but also achieve our vision to make Greater Manchester one of the best places in the world." A press release issued by GMCA this morning lists £250million 'additional money' brought in for Greater Manchester from the Government: £243million for the Transforming Cities Fund, £3.8million homelessness trailblazer funding, £1.8million Social Impact Bond 'to help those homeless people most in need', and £2million from the Mayoral Capacity Fund. A further Greater Manchester Combined Authority meeting on Tuesday, 20th February, has an agenda item for the GMCA Mayor General Budget 2018/19 to be presented by Andy Burnham. However, despite other papers relevant to the meeting being available, there is a note by this item stating the report is 'to follow'.

| So, if people are sour at paying for this county mayor, just how are they going to react when the revolutionary's at the council all start screaming for their pay rises? Use your council (both city and county) or lose it. There will be offsets in areas the county mayor covers - we just have to see what they are. |

| If Mr Burnham actually did what he said on the arguments he put forward when he was voted in I would willingly pay the extra money ..and I am sure there would be no backlash if he lived up to his promises...but alas,I fear that the promises are not being met. The homeless are increasing .... Where is the extra social housing ?,to name 2 ... Come on Mayor Burnham,please act as you promised !! |

| £6.30 P/A not frightening but what will be the accumulated increase when this incompetent council add the government permitted increase which know doubt they will.
As many have said Mayor Burnham is an asset having operated at the highest level in Westminster politics but he should focus his considerable talents to fundamental issues (Transport etc) not jump on the anti smoking bandwagon we don't pay him for that! there is plenty of noise from others on the subject. As to his 'homeless campaign' lets first look after the hardworking people of Salford & Manchester. A social study of these people should be immediately commissioned and those who are genuinely in trouble directly assisted. I suggest a supervised holding/rehabilitation camp (or station for the politically correct) is erected on the outskirts of the city, serviced, food, provision of warmth, bathing, no drugs or alcohol and social workers and police on hand to rehabilitate or assist it really is a bad as that. The city centre is a disgrace with people sleeping and urinating in shop doorways, recently in the Arndale Centre I witnessed two of these so called homeless shouting at 'foreign people' using the C & F words to them at the top of their voices for being in our country when they are homeless (paraphrased for decency) they were abusing security staff for trying to eject them. Think big Manchester Council/Mayor B you can erect sheds fast enough for your markets get Cnclr Carney on the job. The quality of life for workers and visitors to our city centre has been seriously affected. The problem is this intolerable situation has 'crept up' on us and is becoming the norm. I just stepped back and looked at our city center and was deeply saddened to see young families listening to the foul rantings of the so called homeless. So! lets invest in a 'holding centre' ensuring basics needs are provided but with strict governance we can then move out the wasters by whatever means and help the truly needy. We need big thinkers!

| Phil's comment sums up the people of Manchester. Stop moaning, it's Labour asking,, give them all your money. Labour, basically, have the right and privilege to suck as much money out of your pocket as they want, because Manchester is too stupid to ever vote for anything other than Labour. Familiarity breeds contempt. Manchester deserves exactly what it gets, and it will only ever get worse, as once they've got away with it, they'll push it further and harder, year after year. Labour could impose a 50% extra tax on people and Mancunians would just roll over and take it where it hurts. Without competition, the consumer receives poor value for money...and that's an absolute fact. |

| The post if combined authority Mayor was forced on us by 5he leaders of the Greater Manchester Authorities. So a rather lack lustre former MP Andy Burnham got elected to the post, immediately began to pontificate about what he could achieve and so far he has been a dismal failure. Basically he has no powers to hold any of the councils to account. He also followed the traditional Labour Party culture of cronyism so we have four example the former “ two houses” labour MP Beverley Hughes as ourvrathe4 silent p9lic3 commissioner. Perhaps he4 jaunts to her holiday home in the Lakes are more important. Overall it’s a sham! |

| I really hope the Mayors are reading Salford Star. The comments are your voting public and just see what they think. I say it again that Mayors should be unpaid. If they want a highly paid job go and work in the private sector. Public sector must be just about public services. No pet projects of £millions. No cheap loans. No stashed assets. No private partnerships. No art collections. And no excuses on not collecting developers infrastructure costs. If I was Mayor these jobs would be set at expenses only. I feel taken for a ride on a bus with no wheels up a blind alley in a thick fog. |

| I object to paying the police precept,or whatever fancy name they give it..never see a pc unless its for traffic accidents on the main roads.on this subject i was under the impression salford council got rid of its housing stock to housing associations so they are not to blame for rising rents etc...yeh right!!! |

| Answer me this... with all the new builds that have sprung up in the last 12 months surely there is more money in the pot then ever before. So on average let's say there is 100 flats per block well then it doesn't take much to add up the extra money coming in. Also what about the people getting council homes who work full time and have a household income of £50,000 plus that I am funding. I can name a few people on cheap rent but have above average incomes when are you going to get a grip of these people costing us money? |

| Excellent comments above mine. I am interested to know the cost of the Salford Mayor? Can anyone name 10 of his achievements since comming to office? at least you hear from Mayor Burnham and you did hear from Mayor Stewart who did do something, I don't think we can afford either Mayors but getting rid of Dennett would be a start. I have only heard him pontificate on Westminster issues get rid and put the money into social care for Salford children. |

| I hope this 'money for the homeless' isn't just a revenue spinning money merry-go-round for wealthy bureaucrats and 'community charity' directors. I expect to see radical action to rid Greater Manchester of homelessness and slum housing. Is Andy Burnham really donating 15% of his salary towards the cause or is it just more spinderella speak? |

| Will we be paying for Burnham's staff as well. How many assistants and deputies will he have all being paid for by us. Burnham should go and revert back to the old system. He is just another burden on the taxpayers of Greater Manchester. If he was so positive about his role as Mayor he would give himself a huge paycut. |

| I didn't vote for a Salford and/or GM Mayor to pay extra Tax for privilige. They were supposed to self funding. And as for this so called reducton in the GM precept..£7 down to £6.30 is not exactly worth shouting about..not even a loaf of bread.... |

| This sounds like an absolute non story. I mean, what is the big deal? An added £6.30 on your yearly bill. I mean, come on ... Only people from places like Leeds are going to be bothered by having to pay such an outrageous add on as the "Whopping" £6.30. Using a bit of rough mental arithmetic it works out at approximately an extra fourteen pence per week on your bill. Even the Salford Star, as cash strapped as it is could pay such a nominal sum. And don't forget, for that we get a calibre Blairite like Burnham. To my mind it's a bargain. |
