Back in 2015, Salford's Paul Hughes decided to raise money for Cancer Research, as his grandfather had passed away from cancer and his mother-in-law, plus his close friend, Peter Hughes, were also fighting the disease. He set up a football match, Salford Boys vs Winsford Saxons with the teams made up of local lads.
The match raised £1,400 and, since then, there's been two others games that have raised even more funds for different charities, and this has now become an annual event. On June10th, Paul is trying to raise the biggest amount yet with a Salford Saxons v Once Upon A Smile Celebs at FC United's Broadhurst Park stadium.
The Once Upon A Smile squad includes loads of ex-pro footballers, plus soap actors, singers and celebs (see the squad here), who raise money for the charity which `provides emotional, practical and financial support to bereaved families at their time of need to enable them to move forward'.
As well as the match itself on Saturday June 10th, 3pm kick off, there's an after party and trophy presentation from 6:30pm.
Organisers are also currently looking for donations for the raffle and sponsors for the event. Contact Paul for further details paulhughes1980@gmail.com
