The massive history of the women's movement is to be covered in a new ten week course, beginning on Wednesday September 30th, to be taught by ace local historian, Michael Herbert.
The issues covered begin with women peace campaigners during the First World War, and then go on to women councillors in the 1920s, equal rights campaigns, women's unemployed marches in the 1930s, women volunteers in the Spanish Civil War, women's role in the Second World War, the fight for equal pay and the rise of the Women's Liberation Movement in the late 1960s. It goes right up to 1979 – when Margaret Thatcher got elected and...well...find out on the course.
There couldn't be a better lecturer than Michael Herbert, who has been researching and writing about radical history for years. Three years ago he also published the book, Up Then Brave Women: Manchester Radical Women, 1819-1918, and runs Red Flag walks around Salford and Manchester pointing out the hot spots of local radicalism. When not doing radicalism, Michael also runs an incredibly popular course on Doctor Who, which starts again next April.
