As revealed by the Salford Star last week, Salford City Council has launched a vicious attack on a democratically elected representative of Salford City UNISON, the main trade union of Council staff (see previous Salford Star article – click here).
UNISON Branch Treasurer, Ameen Hadi, was hauled before Council bosses after a lobby challenging the Council's cuts to the Health Improvement Service and told that he was no longer allowed to represent his members.
"Salford UNISON has long had an agreement with Salford Council that our members – not our employer – decide who will act as full time officers" states Salford UNISON "Their intention to remove Ameen from this role is unprecedented and is taking place despite UNISON's repeated offer to try and resolve whatever issue the Council feels it has. UNISON has seen no evidence that justifies this attempt to over-rule our right to a democratic union branch."
A further flyer sent out by the union adds "Salford City UNISON condemns the unilateral and unjustified attempt being made by Salford City Council to withdraw secondment rights from our elected Branch Treasurer Ameen Hadi..."
Calling a lobby of the Salford Labour Group of councillors next Monday***, UNISON adds: "We call on all trade unionists, community campaigners and the general public to attend this lobby and send messages of support to office@salfordcityunison.org.uk 0161 794 7425...
As trade unions all over the country are steeling themselves for attacks by the new Conservative Government, it's absolutely shameful and disgraceful that the freshly re-elected Salford Labour Council should be acting in such a manner. The Salford Star calls for all our readers and supporters to attend this lobby on Monday and shame those councillors, who only last week were sporting red rosettes and thanking trade unions for support...

Lobby of Salford Labour Group Postponed
A lobby of Salford Labour Group of councillors, due to be held today at 5pm, has been postponed after the Council backed down a bit for ` a period of meaningful discussions’. A joint statement has been issued:
“The City Council and UNISON have agreed to a period of meaningful discussion and dates have been agreed. Both parties will use their best endeavours to reach a mutually agreeable outcome. During this time, established branch secondments will remain unchanged. At the conclusion of these discussions both parties reserve the right to reach their own decision on the next steps should this be necessary.”
