EXTINCTION REBELLION HITS MANCHESTER WITH CLIMATE CHANGE ROAD BLOCKS, DIE-IN, MARCH AND ARRESTS

Star date: 25th November 2018

EIGHT ARRESTS AS EXTINCTION REBELLION DECLARES IT IS READY TO REBEL AGAINST GOVERNMENT

Manchester Christmas shoppers had never seen anything like it yesterday as new anti-climate change protest group, Extinction Rebellion, held sit down protests on Deansgate, a die-in at St Peter's Square and a further roadblock on Oxford Street, where the TAU riot police made eight arrests.

"The only solution is to rebel against a government that has failed its people" said one speaker "This is the start of the rebellion up north in Manchester. We're all sitting in this road because we want to, because we need to."

'We, in alignment of our consciousness and our reasoning, declare ourselves in rebellion against our Government...'

There were extraordinary scenes in Manchester city centre yesterday when hundreds of mainly young people, including Salford residents, marched from Piccadilly Gardens to Deansgate, where two sit down protests were held in the midst of the Christmas shopping frenzy.

The first sit down road block took place outside the Sawyer's Arms on Deansgate, followed by a much longer one outside Kendal's, where speaker after speaker announced that they 'were ready to rebel', before reading the 'declaration of rebellion'...

Stunned shoppers heard a five minute long tract read out a portion at a time which was then repeated by cheering supporters...

"This is our darkest hour. Humanity finds itself embroiled in an event unprecedented in its history of which, unless immediately addressed, will catapult us further into destruction.

"We hold dear this nation, its peoples and our eco systems and the future of generations to come. The science is clear. We are in the sixth mass extinction and we will face catastrophe if we do not act swiftly and robustly. Biodiversity is being annihilated, our seas are poisoned, acidic and rising. Flooding and desertification will render vast tracts of land uninhabitable and lead to mass migration.

"Our air is so toxic. The United Kingdom is breaking the law. It harms the unborn, whilst causing tens of thousands to die. The breakdown of our climate has begun. There will be more wildfires, unpredictable superstorms, increasing famine and untold drought as food supplies and fresh water disappear. The ecological crises that are impacting upon this nation and indeed this planet and its wildlife can no longer be ignored, denied nor go unanswered by any beings of sound rational thought, ethical conscience, moral concern or spiritual belief.

"In accordance with these values, the virtues of truth and the weight of scientific evidence we declare it our duty to act on behalf of the security and wellbeing of our children, our communities and the future. We, in alignment of our consciousness and our reasoning, declare ourselves in rebellion against our Government.

"The wilful complicity displayed by our Government has shattered meaningful democracy and cast aside the common interest in favour of short term gain. When government and the law fail to provide any assurance of adequate protection as well as security for people's wellbeing and the nation's future it becomes the right of citizens to seek redress in order to restore democracy and to secure the solutions needed to avert catastrophe and protect the future.

"It becomes, not only our right, it becomes our sacred duty to rebel. We hereby declare the bonds of social contract to be null and void which the Government has rendered invalid by its continuing failure to act appropriately.

"We call upon every principled and peaceful citizen to rise with us. We demand to be heard, to apply informed solutions to these ecological crises and to create a national assembly by which to initiate those solutions needed to change our present cataclysm course. We refuse to be bequeathed a dying planet to future generations by failing to act now. We act in peace with ferocious love of these lands in our hearts. We act on behalf of life."

While the declaration was read out, cars, taxis and buses came to a halt, the police looked on, and the public seemed to agree with the sentiments, joining in the cheers.

From there, the march, behind a huge banner reading 'Declare A Climate Emergency – Carbon Neutral by 2025' moved on through the Christmas markets to St Peter's Square, where a die-in took place, while a choir sang, for 'The lives that we will be losing and the lives that we have lost through climate breakdown...'.

From St Peter's Square, a small group marched down Oxford Street, behind another banner reading 'We're all fucked...unless we sort it out right now!', before sitting down in the road on the corner of Portland Street, and refusing to move.

The TAU riot police arrived, with a stand-off lasting around an hour as police liaison teams tried to negotiate with the campaigners..."We are going to be here until we are forced to leave; we do not want to be here but we have to be here" said one of the Extinction Rebellion protesters, as the group chanted 'What do we want? Climate justice. When do we want it? Now!'.

The TAU finally cleared the road as eight of the group were arrested for blocking a public highway.

"Our leaders have had thirty years of warnings, making promises that have never been kept, and meanwhile the earth is in crisis, and the problems we're facing have not just been unaddressed, but have got far, far worse" Extinction Rebellion declared in a public statement.

"In those wasted years, global carbon emissions have risen more than 60% and our animal population has shrunk by 60%" it added "How can we stand by and let this happen to our people, our wildlife, our planet?

"We demand our leaders make immediate and radical changes - for instance committing the UK to be carbon-free by 2025 - in order to prevent the deaths of millions of people, in the UK and in some of the poorest parts of the world, in the years ahead."

Extinction Rebellion is promising more actions, as their members are 'ready to rebel'...

If our Ray does his maths and chemistry right, he will find that each filthy old bus , even with twenty people aboard, and just me in my lean burn petrol car, will produce 10 times as much per passenger mile of the nitrogen family of gases that Ray goes on about. That is why I only pay twenty quid a year road tax. Perhaps we should charge the bus operators extra for all the shite they produce, so they can pass it on to their passengers like Ray. Ray is right about carbon capture, it can be done but is expensive . I think it should be, but only if the captured co2 is re cycled into methanol. There again we are still left with the rest of the shite from coal burning. There is another point to coal mining. The human cost to miners health. I used to know a few lads who used to work down Agecroft pit. All dead now at early ages. All miners die younger than they should. That's why when we say something is the pits and it's bad, that is where we get the saying from. The mines were a terrible risk to miners health. To the nostalgic socialists,I say this. Wicked old Thatcher closed down the pits and the grammar schools. When I am prime minister, I will bring one of these back, but I will send all your grandchildren to the successful institution for seven years. take your pick.

Bob the regular, where do you think all the Nitrous Dioxide,NO2,in the atmosphere comes from? Leprechaun Farts? As to coal,It's perfectly possible to use it with clean tèchnology/carbon capture.

Climate change, it's the latest fad of the lefties. It is not to be confused with all the filth and pollution in our atmosphere, that exists for sure and has got to be got rid of. If electric cars cost the same as petrol ones,I will get one. I am after a new job that comes with and electric Nissan Leaf.Lets look at what the lefties were on about just 30 years ago. It was the miners . Support the miners. What do our resident lefties think the miners dug out of the pits, solar power? Coal is the biggest source of filth and co2 in our atmosphere. And Brian Cox that my new honnoury nephew mentions, he still thinks the yanks landed on the moon, that's how smart he is.

Why is it that confirmed petrol heads get all hung up whenever the questiòn of "the true cost of motoring" is raised ? Paranoia or guilt? Fact, private motorists receive many times more public subsidy than that devoted to bus passangers - Fuel Charge Levy has remained frozeñ for over a decade !

If any of you have Podcast on your phone then type in James Delingpole and find the interview with Jonny ball. Jonny ball goes into climate change and explains how it’s a big con, the climate has always changed and now it’s a money making machine for those at the top. Jonny ball has debated top scientists including the small ones like Brian cox and destroyed their research with facts and this is why Jonny ball and with the likes of David Bellamy and many other scientists who think differently on climate change have been band off tv and radio for the last number of decades. If you want to have your eyes opened, find the James delingpole podcast and listen to Jonny ball the mans a genius and a national treasure, use to watch him when I was a school kid, think of a number, should have been on tv more, but then again, we can’t have the climate change brigade being destroyed on national tv can we.

Here he goes again, our Ray. Public transport good, private transport bad, private housing bad, public housing good. Ray you and I should stand next to a bus stop, with someone from our uni where they have the test gear for emmissions. as the bus pulls away, the readings go sky high. anyway if you get on a bus, and its busy, chances are you're stood next to someone who reeks of backy. Are you a smoker Ray? what about the filth smokers blow into our atmosphere? Smokers and motorists pay huge amounts of tax already, should we not whack bus users a bit also?

Doris Maurice, how would your affordable transport system be funded? Without traffic limitation measures, how would gridlock be prevented?

The idiots that run this city and wanted to impose congestion charging by creating congestion better wise up . Their insidious congestion charging plan has failed ,although they still rake in blood money with bus lane cameras . Get the bus lanes ripped up ,get the idiotic road narrowing schemes reversed ,and most of all get an affordable integrated public transport system implemented as a priority . The gaggle of fraudsters that have caused this chaos must be sacked ,and replaced by committed people who actually care about the environment .

As usual,Bob the regular is attempting to shift the blame - "mucky" diesel busses are put in the frame for causing poor air quality! The bald fact òf the matter is that the emissions crisis will only be tackled when private motorists bear the full cost(economic, environmental and social) of private vehicle use!

Bob, that's the best comment I've ever read from you. It was sublime. My soul came, not once, but three times as I read it. Tell me, have you not contemplated setting up your own Cult? I'd definitely become an acolyte.

Hi 'Pete'. I work as sustainability scientist or an 'eco type' and time to time I have lectured others on climate science. But I'm certainly not in it for the money. Construction workers earn more than most of us. I should know because I've been one.

Thanks SalfordJC such an eloquent rebuke. More my point is why do these rent a mob activists think they have the right to disrupt other normal peoples lives when they protest? You obviously have the right to do things like this (the joy of living in the democracy many of them so despise) but why inflict your leftist views on others?

Well done Extinction Rebellion! Everyone knows the science but chooses to carry on business as usual. More of this is needed to decouple our economy from fossil fuels and reconnect with the natural planetry systems we are part of and rely on.

If you look at the pictures, it seems what we have here is a much better class of protester than the normal unwashed, rent a mob lefty type pole tax rioter. I imagine most of these people will come from the intellectual socialist bastions of Didsbury, Withington, Chorlton plus a couple of busloads of Hebdon Bridgers to Stiffen up support. These people do have a good point, we are polluting the world with god knows how much waste and shite, but why blame the Tories? Both Manchester and Salford and most of the rest of GM is firmly controlled by Labour, and always will be. Parts of our city rate alongside Scunthorpe for air pollution, but their excuse is that they have a steel plant that would stretch from Bexley square to the shopping centre on the precinct. The source of our polution is Diesel busses crawling about all over the place, badly maintained ones. A lot of these protesters love cycling and busses. Try riding a bike in a bus lane. I did recently. You breath in far more shite from the bus in front than the cars beside you.

Probably just your average middle class eco-types, people who lecture everyone else on the forthcoming climate change apocalypse while they earn more than most and have the carbon footprints to match their wages. 'Do as I say, not as I do' is their motto.

great report on action that was long overdue ,,,since 2010 the tories have ripped and shredded their way through our legal rights and legislation , they have introduced more draconian laws and schemes than the Victorians and they were the starting lock to improve the lot of the population..........l think we need to chase these lot out of town when they raise their ugly heads ,,,we should make sure we oppose ALL of their views when we see them on tv programs....bombard TV program websites with our demands....... Support workers in struggle who are threatened with closures , look after the jobless and homeless in everyway possible .........and make sure our brothers and sisters who are refugees , or seeking asylum are not left at the mercy of hostile gangs .....and finally say to the likes of DJB ....Shut the fuck up yor Cretin .....you will also be in their queue somewhere when they think they have sorted us out

When people feel ignored and yet have important things to say they get together and show their frustration. The action yesterday was dominated by younger people because they have the energy, and realise things are going to get worse during their lives. People who disagree, like DJB, don't care and don't understand that progress comes from people making the effort to object when things are going wrong. Many people who have rebelled and stood up for a better world and even suffering imprisonment are now our heros. We must get educated about Climate Change as a starter. The Talk on Climate Change, this Monday at St Paul's Church from 7.30, is open to all. ( see advert here and article on Saturday's Star.),Don't bury your head; it's our world and we need to fight for it.

Only 7 arrests? The police are failing in their duty and should use more force to dissuade these morons, we are getting to the point where these activists have a meeting on Monday to decide which cause they will champion this week. If they don't like it they can frack of.
