JOHN COOPER CLARKE ON THE LATE CHUCK BERRY

Star date: 19th March 2017

WHEN JOHNNY MET CHUCK...

"Who does he think I am, Ronnie Wood?' I'll be it!.."

It would seem the most mad collaboration but back in the early 2000s, Salford's John Cooper Clarke compered for Chuck Berry during his tour which included Manchester and Spain.

With the rock and roll legend's passing last night we thought we'd re-post a little anecdote told to the Salford Star by Johnny C back in 2007...

The rock and roll legend that is Chuck Berry passed away last night and, in tribute, the Salford Star here re-posts an anecdote told back in 2007, when Johnny Clarke met Chuck...

"He was on at the Opera House with Jerry Lee Lewis, we went down and, I don't know, we sort of hit it off with Chuck somehow" John recalled "I'm like `Who does he think I am, Ronnie Wood?' I'll be it!

"In fact we went the full Rolling Stones in Spain and I got into the Keith persona because you're entitled to wear a bandana there, it being sweaty and that, so we had the time of our lives.

"Chuck is fantastic, great to watch, even when he's just going through the motions" he added "It's a shame that My Ding-a-ling is the high point of his act but he really is great."

Chuck Berry RIP

SALFORD MAYOR UNVEILS PLAN TO BUILD FOR PROFIT HOUSING

Yesterday, Salford City Mayor, Paul Dennett, further revealed plans for Salford Council to build council houses for sale and private rent, with the profits from these subsidising desperately needed social rent properties.

This was part of his new 'vision' for housing across Greater Manchester, unveiled at  Salford Lads Club. While homelessness also took centre stage at the Conference, people who actually work with the street homeless were denied entry.

RESIDENTS COULD 'VOTE WITH THEIR FEET' AND LEAVE ADMITS COUNCIL LEAD MEMBER

The Salford tower block cladding crisis could take years to sort out and will cost millions of pounds that the Council doesn't have, civic leaders told a full meeting of Salford City Council yesterday as they criticised the Tory Government's response post-Grenfell.

Meanwhile, as concrete boards are starting to be installed over exposed insulation on the blocks, Lead Member, Bill Hinds, said residents could start "voting with their feet" and leave their homes.

SALFORD LADS CLUB AFFORDABLE HOUSING CONFERENCE TO FACE PROTESTS

Tomorrow, 20th July, Salford City Mayor, Paul Dennett, is to be the keynote speaker at a 'housing crisis' conference, hosted by the National Housing Federation and the Joseph Rowntree Foundation at Salford Lads Club.

Dennett will be setting out a new 'affordable housing vision' for Greater Manchester but homeless campaigners will be protesting and holding a procession from the Lads Club to a squat at Hulme Hippodrome. Salford City Council has been bulldozing affordable housing for the last decade and allowing developers to evade contributing to new affordable housing.
